I am a multidisciplinary artist. I have created art through sculpture, mixed media, paintings, photography, two-dimensional works, and drawings. Although I have experience with different media in art, I am still trying to find my own voice as an artist. I enjoy painting and photography, but my strength is in mixed media collage art.
In art school at Jefferson State Community College where I earned my associate’s degree in art, I participated in a few art shows. I won third place in my second attempt of entering the art show. I titled this piece “Phenomenal Woman” inspired by the poem Phenomenal Woman written by Maya Angelou which is a mixed media collage. I cut out images from magazines to create this artwork. I also included my handwriting with words from the poem in a form of a human face. My art instructor said it was genius. She convinced me to enter my work into the show and the rest is history.
I started doing collages before I went to art school. I did vision boards every year right before New Year’s Eve to set goals for the new year. This practice helped me to become great at this medium. In the future, I would like to explore photography and painting in more depth. Photography is a medium that I find interesting. I want to use what I’ve learned in beginning photography as a steppingstone for greater art. Painting is an artform that I am practicing now. It is very broad, and I am searching for my place in this space.
